The 2018 Ford Mustang GT is the refinement of everything Ford has worked for in the Pony car since it was introduced in 1964. With the 5 liter GT engine producing 460 horsepower coupled to a six speed standard transmission mated to a four wheel independent suspension Mustang performs and handles as the designerscould only dream about when the Mustang was first introduced.
I have a driven both the 10 speed automatic and the 6 speed standard version GT and I realize that most stick shift drivers can’t compete with the automatic for shift speed or timing, however, nothing enhances the pure joy of driving like a floor shifter and clutch.
Our test car was the Mustang Gt Premium Fastback
with a base price of $39,355 for 2019. Entry level coupes can start as low as $25,845. At any level the new Mustang is a car worth driving, but the fun goes up in proportion to the price tag.
The cool starts when you approach the car and the Pony puddle light comes on!
Our 2018 model in Triple Yellow came with heated and cooled leather trimmed interior that is the best Ford has ever put in the little muscle car. Comfort is greatly enhanced with better seat support, improved sound deadening and climate control. The interior hosts the greatly improved Sync system that now includes Alexa connectivity as well as FordPass and My Key. The 8 inch screen offers a glare free display for navigation and a responsive touch screen for control of comfort and entertainment features. Of course Apple Car Play and Android Auto are included.
The 12 inch driver’s information center is a digital dash that can be configured for the pilot’s preference and flips to needed gauges for each drive mode. Not only can you select the display you want, you can also change the color of the readouts. When you take the 12 inch dash option you get My Mode. My Mode will return all of the settings to your preference including exhaust tuning and steering. The LCD digital cluster is optional of the Premium and Bullet models.
There are 2 power options for 2018
Ford dropped the V6 option and offers a turbo charged EcoBoost 4 banger that kicks out over 300 horsepower. The 5 liter V8 GT model has had the power increased to 460 horses with 420 pounds of torque. Even the base EcoBoost model comes with sporty features such as line lock, launch control and limited slip differential. The Performance Package adds stiffer springs and stabilizers, a larger radiator and bigger brakes. The MagneRide shocks are available as a bump up from the Performance Package.
The Premium models come with leather trim heated and cooled seats, the 8 inch Sync system, a premium audio system and dual zone climate control.
GT models come with the updated V8 5 liter motor that now has both direct fuel injection and the older port injection. This improves low end responsiveness and helps to eliminate the carbon problem seen in so many GSI engines. The red line is a remarkable 7400 rpm letting you adding to the fun of a stick shift.
The 4 wheel independent suspension introduced in 2015 dramatically changed the handling character of the Mustang and the new GT improves on that with the addition of the MagneRide shocks that help keep the car glued to the road and flattened out in corners. There is almost no body roll in tight high speed turns but overall ride quality is also improved as the MagneRide adaptive suspension cushions everyday bumps and ripples for a un-sports car quality ride on the highway.
For those of us not using the new Mustang as a race car Ford offers the Safe and Smart Package, a suite of driver-assist technologies that includes Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Lane-Keeping System, adaptive cruise control, auto high-beams, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning with brake support, and rain-sensing wipers. The combination of multiple air bags, stability control systems and structure design earn the Mustang a 5 star safety rating.
The 2018 Ford Mustang is still a car to inspire the young at heart to take to the road. You can find more images and information at Ford’s Mustang site
