The 2019 Ford Expedition is as near as you can get to a full-sized luxury SUV without spending $20,000 more for a Lexus or Esplanade. Our test vehicle, a 2019 Ford Expedition Limited offered a quality leather trimmed interior, state of the art electronics, excellent performance, 9300 pounds of towing and massive room for passengers or cargo.

The Ford Expedition was redesigned in 2018 and remains unchanged for 2019. Sporting an all-aluminum body and the 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine the Expedition is setting sales records. A well-designed cabin plan, easy access, good fuel economy, and stylish trim makes the Expedition appealing to that segment of the buying public needing a large SUV.

The exterior of the Expedition is clean of additional badges or brightwork fooling the eye into seeing a smaller vehicle. Our Texas Edition had one identifier on the tailgate. The size of the SUV is evident once you are inside. The 3-row utility has spacious seating in each row making it possible to carry 8 passengers in comfort. The second-row seats slide forward and tilt making it easy to enter the third set, even without removing the child car seat you may have there.

Ford Expedition is Entertaining in new ways

The cabin is well thought out with everything easily within reach and clearly understood. Sync 3 takes center stage in the dash with its 8-inch touch screen display. For 2019 the Ford Expedition Sync system includes not only Apple Car Play and Android Auto, but also Waze navigation and Alexa. The functions used most often are duplicated with manual controls eliminating the need to change screens as you drive. Of course, you can also use voice commands for many features. If you want to use your smartphone assistant, hold the voice command button down longer, and it bypasses Ford’s voice and goes directly to your phone.
Audio is handled with a Bang and Olufsen 1000-watt, 12 speaker stereo. You can rely on broadcast radio, play your own music or tune into Sirius Satellite radio. There are 2 USB connectors in each row, as well as 110-volt outlets in the front and second seats.
There is a rear seat entertainment system available, but most people will probably choose to use their own tablets and the onboard Wi-Fi hot spot. The hot spot will handle up to 10 connections and is provided by AT&T. Hopefully, the manufacturers will find a way to allow us to pick our own service provider for Wi-Fi. 10-way power front seats are heated and cooled, with excellent lumbar adjustment and enough bolster to keep you centered. The second-row seating is heated, and the back can tilt to make the passenger more comfortable. Third-row seats can be raised or lowered into the deck for a flat storage area from switches in the rear compartment or on the dash. The second row can be remotely lowered but must be raised manually.

Smooth and Powerful

The Expedition driving experience is remarkably good. The large vehicle handles well with excellent steering response, little body roll on turns and superior braking. The size and weight of the Expedition add to the smooth ride, and the suspension is well tuned to dampen the rough spots in life’s highways. With 400 horsepower the big SUV accelerates with ease, and the 10-speed transmission makes sure you have the gear ratio you need to make the most of the power.
Our test truck had the Ford Co-Pilot 360 system with the added tech package that brings adaptive cruise control to the Expedition. On the highway the combination of adaptive cruise, blind spot monitors and lane keeping help to make the trip more comfortable and safer. In tighter places, the parking sensors, back up camera and cross traffic alerts can prevent expensive mistakes. Ford’s parking assist helps you get the long SUV into parallel or perpendicular spots without scaping fenders or the embarrassing back and forth.
Fuel economy and full-size SUV’s are usually mutually exclusive, but not so on the new Ford Expedition. On our 1000 plus mile road test we averaged over 20 miles per gallon. Premium fuel is not required in the small 3.5-liter EcoBoost motor but may improve the economy. The 25-gallon fuel tank gives the Expedition a range of over 400 miles. The Max editions have a 30-gallon tank.
If you are going to use your Expedition to explore the great outdoors, you can add a four-wheel drive and a max towing package. Properly equipped the Expedition can tow 9300 pounds. Ford includes trailer sway control, blind spot monitors that cover the trailer, 7 and 4 pin connectors and integrated trailer brake controller. Pro-Trailer Assist is available and makes backing a trailer up easy even for a first timer.

Go Off-Road in Comfort

When you pick a four-wheel drive, it comes with Terrain Management and Trail Control. Terrain Management allows you to select the surface you are driving on; snow, sand, mud or pavement and then adjusts the electronics to make the best use of traction control and other systems to get you through it. Trail management is like low-speed cruise control that works up to 20 mph to negotiate the path up the hill or across the dune. It continually monitors the trail and changes throttle, brakes and traction control to keep moving. All you have to do is steer.
The features and useful gadgets list goes on extensively, from small things like being able to select your ambient lighting color to important stuff like keyless entry and start. The best way to really understand what the Expedition has to offer is to spend some time in the driver’s seat.
The Expedition is offered in 3 trim levels, XLT, Limited and the top of the line Platinum. Out test was in the Limited edition. Each is available in either the standard length or an extended Max body. The Max extension adds 17 cubic feet of storage behind the third row. The base XLT begins at $52,160, and the Platinum Max body comes in at $76,060. While the Ford Expedition is pricey, you get near luxury comfort and ride without the 6-digit price tag.
