2019 Ford Edge, roomy 2 row CUV

Ford’s popular Mid-Size CUV, the Edge, has a few improvements for the 2019 model year including more horsepower, a better transmission and driver safety aids. The Ford Edge is a safe middle of the road selection in the CUV marketplace, offering a good ride, decent performance and above average storage space. An entry-level price of under thirty thousand dollars makes the Edge affordable, and the higher trim levels and options offer convenience and comfort without busting the budget.

Turbocharged Power

The 2-liter, twin-scroll turbocharged engine produces 250 horsepower this year, up 5 from last year. Mating the engine to the 8-speed automatic transmission does more to improve the overall performance than the small increase in power.  The optional Intelligent All-Wheel Drive enhances stability and safety in inclement weather.

For those wanting more performance and a sportier feel, the new for 2019 Edge St brings a 2.7-liter twin turbo V6 with 335 horses, a better suspension and distinctive body trims.

The big news on the 2019 Ford Edge is the inclusion of Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 system that brings pre-collision alert with emergency braking, blind spot monitors, lane keeping and rear park sensors. A more advanced system is also available that includes adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist and enhanced active park assist. Ford is bringing this lifesaving technology to their full line over the next couple of years.

Our test car was a fully equipped Titanium model with a sticker price of $48,210 including transportation charges. That puts the Edge at the entry price of a Lexus RX. The Edge SEL trim pricing is more competitive at a base price of $33,300, and rebates of $3750 are available now.

Our 2019 Ford Edge Titanium came well equipped with LED lighting, hands-free tail gate, leather trim interior, power heated and cooled seats and the 8-inch Ford Sync 3 system. Equipment group 301 added adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and navigation for $4150, and the Titanium Elite package that includes special wheels and side moldings added another $1195.

The performance was acceptable if not great. We recorded a 0 to 60 mph run at 8.2 seconds. That’s good enough to negotiate traffic, if not exciting. The 8-speed transmission makes good use of the 250 horsepower without jarring shifts or hesitation on downshifts. The all-wheel drive does help the car remain surefooted in turns and on wet surfaces.

The cabin is clean and straightforward, without wood trim or excessive brightwork. Everything is well organized for easy access for the driver, including the center stack sports the 8-inch touch screen for the infotainment and navigation systems. Unlike many cars today, most touch operations are duplicated with buttons and knobs. The 2019 Edge has large windshield pillars affecting the front corner view and substantial blind spots at the rear corners.

Seating is comfortable in the 10-way power seats that include good lumbar support. A heated steering wheel and seats are standard, while cushion cooling is optional. Dual zone air conditioning is standard on the SEL and Titanium and does an outstanding job of keeping the cabin cozy. Excellent soundproofing keeps noise at a minimum inside, and the Edge suspension dampens most road rumples. Overall the Edge provides a pleasant if not exceptional ride experience.

The Sync 3 System offers a wide variety of functional features, the best of which is the Apple Car Play or Android Auto app. Our test car didn’t have the factory navigation application, but the smartphone integration made it unnecessary as the phones built in maps guided us. Upgraded audio is provided by a Bang and Olufsen 12 speaker stereo. Our 2019 Edge test car lacked the bird’s eye view 360-degree camera system, but it is available.

The Edge is a 2-row CUV with no option for a third row offered. Its strength in the class is the vast storage room area with the seats up or down. With the rear seats up, you have over 39 cubic feet of storage, and with them down it expands to over 73 cubic feet. That makes the 2019 Edge a very useable choice for the active small family.

The 2019 Ford Edge does the job it is designed for well, providing dependable, safe and pleasant transportation. The price point is a bit high for the value on the higher trims but very competitive on the SEL models.
